1. High-quality and helpful content

Number one on our list is creating high-quality content, and that's no coincidence. Content is the backbone of any effective SEO approach. Good content is about more than simply incorporating keywords into your texts.

Google's algorithm is becoming increasingly adept at recognizing content that is truly valuable to users. The key is to create content that genuinely helps your visitors with the problem or issue they are facing. This means providing information that is relevant, up-to-date, and helpful. By focusing on the questions and problems of your target audience, you can create content that both users and search engines will appreciate.

This is not only good for your rankings, but also ensures a positive user experience that contributes to conversions and customer satisfaction. Visitors who find valuable information stay on your site longer, return more often, and are more likely to share your content with others.

2. Optimal user experience

The second crucial factor is ease of use, or the user experience on your website. Technology contributes greatly to this user experience and is one of the three important pillars of SEO, alongside content and authority.

A good user experience encompasses various aspects. The loading time of your website is particularly important in this regard. Visitors have become increasingly impatient—just as we want to receive a package within a day in our daily lives, we also don't want to wait too long for a page to load. A slow website results in a high bounce rate, which in turn has a negative impact on your rankings.

In addition to loading time, the navigation structure of your website is also essential. An important principle we apply is the "three-clicks rule": ensure that visitors can reach a conversion page within three clicks. This not only improves user-friendliness, but also increases the chance that visitors will actually convert.

Other important elements of a good user experience are:

  • Clear and intuitive menu structures
  • Logical organization of information
  • Responsive design that works well on all devices
  • Easy-to-find contact options

The easier it is for visitors to navigate your website, the greater the chance that you will retain a visitor on your website.

3. Choosing the right keywords

The third success factor is choosing the right keywords. This may seem obvious, but it is surprising how many companies get it wrong by focusing on the wrong terms.

An effective keyword strategy starts with thorough keyword research. This involves looking not only at what people are searching for in relation to your product or service, but also at the intention behind these searches. Is someone looking for information, do they want to make a comparison, or do they have a direct intention to purchase?

By choosing keywords that match different stages in the customer journey, you can reach a broader target audience. This allows you to include both short-tail keywords (short, general terms) and long-tail keywords (longer, more specific search phrases) in your strategy. Long-tail keywords often have a lower search volume, but they are more specific and therefore often have a higher conversion rate.

It is important to select keywords that are not only relevant to your business, but also match the current authority of your website. If you are just starting out, it is wiser to focus on less competitive terms first, and then build your authority for the more competitive keywords.

4. Schema markup and rich snippets

In fourth place are schema markups, or the rich snippets you can see in Google. These expanded search results show additional information and make your content more visually appealing in the search results.

Rich snippets are the results you see in Google that are not directly your standard search result, but a piece of information about a page, a photo, or a direct link to your website. You often find them above the regular search results, which makes them stand out.

Implementing the right schema markup helps Google better understand your content and display it in the most relevant way. This can lead to a higher CTR (Click-Through Rate), even if your position in the search results remains unchanged. A higher CTR is not only good for your traffic, but can also be a positive signal for Google, which in turn can contribute to better rankings in the long run.

There are different types of schema markup that you can implement, depending on your content type and objectives. FAQ schemas, product schemas with prices and reviews, event schemas with dates and locations—all of these can contribute to better visibility in search results.

5. E-E-A-T: Expertise, experience, authority, and trustworthiness

The fifth and final success factor is E-E-A-T, which stands for Expertise, Experience, Authority, and Trustworthiness. These are guidelines from Google that determine whether you are seen as an authority in your field.

E-E-A-T has become crucial in today's SEO landscape. Google wants to show its users the most reliable and authoritative sources, especially for topics that can impact someone's finances, health, or well-being.

To comply with these guidelines, you must demonstrate that you truly understand your product or service. You can do this by creating substantive, well-researched content that showcases your expertise. In addition, it is important to demonstrate your reliability by being transparent about your company, team, and processes.

If you comply with these rules, Google will truly see you as the authority in your field. This translates directly into better positions in search results for relevant search terms.

The correlation between the success factors

It is important to understand that these five success factors do not work optimally on their own. They reinforce each other and together form a powerful whole. A website with excellent content but poor user experience will struggle to rank highly. The same applies to a technically perfect website without valuable content.

At Reward, we have observed that the way we implement these factors has changed significantly in recent years, but the basic principles remain the same. Ten years ago, SEO was primarily focused on optimizing websites. The three pillars (authority, content, and technology) were already important back then, but their implementation was different.

Whereas content used to consist mainly of landing pages, blogs, and texts on a website, content has now become much broader. We now think of videos, YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, posts, and of course TikTok. The main pillars are still there, but the way we fill them in has changed enormously in recent years.
