How long does SEO really take? Find out when you can expect to see the first results.

SEO takes time, but how long exactly? In this blog, you will discover how quickly you can expect results, what determines the speed, and what you can realistically hope for.

When is SEO worthwhile?

When we talk to (potential) customers, there is one question we regularly hear at Reward: "How long does it take before SEO efforts yield results?"

We think this is a logical question—you invest time and money in SEO, and naturally you want to know when you will see a return on that investment in the form of better rankings in Google and more visitors to your website. We would ask the same question.

Our answer? SEO is a long-term game. Of course, that's a short and vague answer. But we can clarify it. That's why we decided to write this blog to explain when you can expect to see the first SEO results.

SEO is not a sprint, but a marathon

We do not provide any guarantees regarding when you will see results. As we often mention during our conversations with clients, it is always challenging to make such promises in advance with SEO. We do not often provide guarantees in this regard.

The timeline of SEO depends on various factors that differ for each company:

  • Competition in your industry
  • The current authority of your website
  • How long have you been working with SEO?
  • The age of your domain

Link building is also a very important factor in this process. Together, these variables determine how quickly you can expect to progress.

A realistic expectation of the timeline

For this example, let's assume a new website with a new domain that is just starting with SEO. Based on our experience, we outline a timeframe of what you can roughly expect.

1-3 months: visibility begins to grow

In the first three months, we will work intensively on content creation. What we see is that your website starts to become visible in search engines during this period. This means that you start to get impressions in Google, but not necessarily many clicks yet.

3-6 months: first positions in the top 10

Between three months and six months, you will start to reach the top 10 search results. This usually happens first for less competitive keywords, which are often keywords with a lower volume and therefore less competition.

This is an important moment, because now you are actually starting to attract traffic to your website. What we know from research is that 70% of Google users only click on the top 3 results, so the ultimate goal remains to grow to those positions.

6-12 months: Serious competition

Between six months and a year, you will really start to compete on important keywords for your industry. We expect that from this point on, you will really start to compete in the top 10 keywords that are important to you.

This is when your SEO efforts really start to pay off. We often see that the results start to pay off from this period onwards.

After 12 months: Structural results

After a year, we usually see that websites really start to pay off. Your position in search engines becomes more stable, you get consistent organic traffic, and the SEO strategy starts to pay off.

From this point on, the return on investment only continues to grow. As we often say to customers: "Always give it at least six months." But we know that a year is actually more realistic to see substantial results.

 

Why does SEO take so long?

It's understandable that you would like to see faster results, but there are good reasons why SEO takes time:

1. Google trusts established websites more: We see that websites that are a bit older and have a history of link building or collaboration with another SEO party often move more easily into those top 10, top 5, and top 3 positions.

2. Competition is increasing: Online competition is growing. Last year, for the first time, there were more online stores than offline stores. This means that there is indeed a lot of competition online.

3. Technical aspects must be optimized: Aspects such as loading speed, URL structure, and clear navigation are all important technical elements that contribute to a good user experience.

Technical optimizations are also important

Technology is one of the three key pillars of SEO (alongside authority and content). Technology contributes greatly to the user experience on your website. Consider:

  • The loading time of your website
  • Pages that may or may not be found
  • Setting up your URL structure
  • The ability for visitors to move quickly around your website
  • The header structure that determines how quickly you land on the next page

These are all things that contribute to good technical SEO and that take time to optimize and see results.

SEO is not a quick fix, but a strategic investment that takes time to pay off. While we cannot guarantee how quickly you will see results, we do know that clients who are patient and consistently invest in their SEO strategy ultimately achieve the most sustainable and valuable results.

Do you want to do SEO yourself or outsource it? In theory, you could do it yourself, but it requires a lot of study and preparatory work. We have the right tools, are close to the action, are always up to date, and have the right training and development. Outsourcing your SEO is not only cheaper, but also a lot more efficient than doing it yourself.

SEO can be seen as a strategic investment.

The key is to make a realistic forecast, be patient with the process, and work with a partner who is transparent about both the costs and the potential returns.
